Deborah Mullins
Textile artist
Deborah's family is very sad to update her website to record that she died on 20th December 2020. She had created new work through her final illness and had led a workshop on Zoom only a few weeks before she died.
We can't respond to more than an occasional enquiry but you are welcome to ask (perhaps by an e-mail to petermullins611 at gmail dot com) about
a one hour long video of the talk Deborah gave to the Selby Embroiderers’ Guild which we have uploaded to one of her son’s Dropbox and for which have supplied the link to one of the groups to which she would have given the talk
and a list we have made of each of the cards she had had printed for sale linking each one to the image in the Gallery in this website.
My work is primarily based around Palestine, its recent history and ongoing culture. The 70th anniversary in 2018 of the Nakba - catastrophe - has encouraged pieces based on the less and less tangible memories centred on the symbolic Key of Return.
Highly prized Bethlehem embroidery has provided the inspiration for further collections. Reflecting my desire to see Bethlehem free from its current constraints, the 'Open Bethlehem' series has freed up and played with elements of traditional pattern and design to produce pieces that acknowledge their source but point in a new direction.
My current ongoing series 'Borders' makes intensive use of the tahriri (couched gold cord) designs on Bethlehem dresses to look at imposed borders within the West Bank. Most recently, during lockdown, I have been investigating the many circular designs, 'roundels', found on dresses and jackets.
